The Crystal Festival Story
How a passion for rocks, minerals, and gems turned into one of the most beloved gem show circuits in the Mountain West — the story behind Crystal Festival.
Every great thing starts somewhere. For Crystal Festival, it started with a rock.
Not a particularly rare rock. Not a museum-quality specimen. Just a rock that caught the light in a way that made me stop and think: how does something this beautiful just exist in the ground?
That question sent me down a path I never expected — and eventually led to Crystal Festival.
Who Is Behind Crystal Festival?
My name is Adrienne McElwain. I am the founder of Crystal Barista and the organizer behind every Crystal Festival show.
Before I was running gem shows across the Mountain West, I was just a person who loved rocks. I grew up fascinated by geology, by the idea that the earth has been making beautiful things for billions of years and most of us walk right past them every day.
That fascination turned into a collection. The collection turned into a business — Crystal Barista, where I source minerals, gems, and crystals from small family mines in over 41 countries around the world. And the business eventually turned into Crystal Festival.
Why Gem Shows?
I started attending gem and mineral shows as a vendor years ago. I loved everything about them — the community, the specimens, the conversations, the look on a kid's face when they hold a crystal for the first time.
But I also noticed something: not every show was created equal. Some shows were incredible. Others felt like an afterthought — too few vendors, poor organization, no sense of community.
I wanted to create something better.
What Makes Crystal Festival Different
When I started Crystal Festival, I had a clear vision: a show that felt like a community gathering, not just a marketplace.
That means:
Curated vendors. Every vendor at a Crystal Festival show is hand-selected. I look for quality, variety, and people who genuinely love what they do. You will not find low-quality imports or mass-produced trinkets at our shows. You will find real specimens, real stories, and real passion.
Kid-friendly events. I believe the next generation of rockhounds starts at shows like ours. Every Crystal Festival event includes activities for kids, because getting children excited about geology and natural history matters.
Accessible pricing. Gem shows can feel intimidating if you think everything is priced for serious collectors. At Crystal Festival, you will find specimens at every price point — from a few dollars to investment-grade pieces. Everyone deserves to go home with something they love.
Community first. Crystal Festival is not just a show. It is a gathering of people who share a love of the earth's natural beauty. We want every attendee to feel welcome, whether it is their first show or their fiftieth.
The Crystal Barista Connection
Crystal Festival grew out of Crystal Barista, my mineral and gem sourcing business. Through Crystal Barista, I travel the world visiting mines, meeting miners, and sourcing specimens directly from the source.
That experience informs everything about Crystal Festival. I know what quality looks like. I know what fair pricing looks like. And I know how to find vendors who share those values.
The Crystal Barista brand also includes subscription boxes — monthly deliveries of hand-selected crystals and minerals — and Crystal Brew Collective, our line of specialty coffees with geological names and hidden treasures inside every bag. (Yes, really. There is a rock in the coffee. It is a whole thing.)
Where We Are Going
Crystal Festival has grown from a small regional show into a circuit spanning Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Nevada — with more states on the horizon.
In 2027, we are taking things even further with our first international mining tour to Brazil. Twelve guests will spend 15 days mining in the gem-producing desert regions of Brazil, keeping everything they find. It is the kind of experience I dreamed about when I first fell in love with rocks.
But no matter how big Crystal Festival grows, the mission stays the same: bring people together around a shared love of rocks, minerals, and gems. Make it accessible. Make it joyful. Make it something worth driving across the state for.
We will see you at the show.
